How to plan business trips during times of uncertainty

Always have back up plans

It is important to be prepared for many scenarios even if you do not believe there is a chance of them ever happening. Because usually the most unlikely events are the ones that occur. Therefore, it is best to have a general plan of action before the event actually happens. In this sense your company will be able to take action and be prepared to utilize the crisis event to its advantage. During this process it is also important to not only think about what will happen to the company but also to its employees. Therefore, there needs to be a high level of open communication and collaboration.

You may have to work from home

Be cautious if you do travel to one of the high-risk countries you may be asked to stay in home quarantine for the next 14 days. This will limit the risk of spreading the virus in case the traveler has been infected.

It is highly advised if a traveler does feel unwell to immediately contact their doctor and limit interactions with other people. If the traveler that feels unwell must leave their house it is recommended to keep a distance of at least 2 meters from other people and to please refrain from using public transportation and attending any public events or congregate settings. Such settings may include shopping malls, stadiums, movie theaters, workplaces, and schools.

Many recommend even if you do feel well to still limit yourself from going to any congregate settings as listed above and if it is possible to work from home. This will significantly decrease the risk of you getting in contact with the virus.

Try to not touch your face

Even if you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds every so often and put on hand sanitizer in between washes, it is still advised to try and limit yourself from touching your face. Even when you think your hands are clean, they are most probably not. When you are unable to wash your hands regularly please use hand sanitizer or a hand wipe in between washes.

Safest place to sit is the window seat

As stated in the CDC and National Geographic if you must travel then sit by the window. By sitting by the window or closest as you can, you are limiting the likely hood of being in contact with an infected passenger. As well as minimizing using the lavatory or moving around the cabin during the flight may reduce your chances of being in contact with an infected passenger. As well as, according to the CDC due to the air filtration in airplanes the risk of infection is generally low.

If there is a trip you cannot miss

Some people may not have an option and must travel. Therefore, it may be most beneficial for you to buy flight tickets and accommodation that have flexible cancellation policies. Usually these flight tickets and accommodations will be more expensive than regular ones, however, like this you will have the most flexibility. Easiest way for you to book flexi-tickets is through an online travel platform. The platform will enable you to find the best prices by automatically comparing the prices for you. The platform also enables you to efficiently make modifications to your trip by having a 24/7 support team.

Know your traveler’s whereabouts

It is very difficult for companies to keep track of everything that is happening around the world and constantly being ahead of crises that may or may not happen. However, one thing that can be done easily and efficiently is increasing the safeness of their traveler. One way to make the traveler feel more protected is by the employer having the ability to check on their whereabouts, without interfering and constantly asking which city are you in. One way an employer can keep track of their employees whom are on a business trip in through an online travel management platform. The platform would allow for the employee to plan and book their trip but also help out the employer once the traveler is on their business trip. The platform would help out the employer by having an option on the platform that allows to track each traveler’s whereabouts in real time. This feature may seem as unnecessary at first however, with every day’s schedule being so hectic knowing your traveler’s whereabouts is one less thing you have to keep track of.
